Sometimes they seem to have no logic, and often there isn't a one-word equivalent to each phrasal verb. However, if you want to master English you have to learn them, one by one.
We chose five phrasal verbs, common in British English, that you might come across on a journey to England.
1. Your encounters with phrasal verbs can start even before your aircraft touches down. It’s always important to have the correct paperwork when you arrive in a new country, so one of the cabin crew may come round and ask you to fill in a landing card.
2. When you arrive at the airport you might want to get a taxi. If there’s a line of people already waiting you may have to queue up for a few minutes. 3. Finally you arrive at your destination – you’re going to stay with a host family as part of an English Steps immersion course. They ask you to come in, and sit down. Immediately you realise you’re going to get on with them. 4. You’re tired after your journey, and the next morning you wake up late. When you get up you find a note on the kitchen table. It says: “Help yourself to breakfast. Do you want to go out this evening? We’ve got tickets for a football match – City are playing United! 5. What a great start to your stay! You could try learning a few phrasal verbs as you come across them every day, maybe grouping them by main verb or topic. Or why not keep a phrasal verbs notebook and write down new ones you meet – that would be a great thing to do on an English Steps immersion course! |
